When I was in school and trying to write a paper my Mom used to say "if you can't get started just start by writing 'What I want to say is...' and just spell it out. You can go back and jazz it up later." To this day if I get writer's block I will just start writing down information in a very straightforward, obvious, not at all subtle way and then edit it to make it more interesting the next day, when I am fresh. Works every time. Sometimes I don't even need to edit it.
