By Michael Stelzner
Social media is seen by many marketers as the next gold rush.
To understand how marketers are using social media, we commissioned the Social Media Marketing Industry Report: How Marketers Are Using Social Media to Grow Their Businesses.
We set out to uncover the “who, what, where, when and why” of social media marketing with this report. Nearly 900 of your peers provided the kind of insight that previously has not existed. In this report you’ll find:
- The top social media marketing questions marketers want answered
- How much time marketers are investing in social media
- The benefits of social media
- How time invested impacts results
- The top social media tools
- And much more!
If you’re pondering starting social media marketing, these findings will help push you over the edge. If you’re already onboard, feel free to examine what the really experienced marketers are doing (and use this study to persuade others).
Enjoy the report! Remember, the nature of social media is to “share,” so if you find value here, please let your peers know about this report. Download the report here.

Great white paper - I really like the managemnent summary video. Your opener “some people see Social Media as the next goldrush” is a terrifying thought. The people who made the money on the goldrsh were the people selling the picks and shovels not the guys digging for gold. You say people are closing business after few years, I am genertating prospects (which will close) after a only a few weeks. A must read whitepaper - thanks.

Michael,
Thanks for the report. It pretty much confirms what I’ve already suspected about Twitter and other social networking sites. I’m currently in process of integrating my coaching business and other online ventures with Twitter and Facebook, etc. It would seem that Twitter is the hottest right now, but I think it really depends on how much time and energy you invest into whichever site you’re using to promote and network.
March 24th, 2009 at 6:15 am
Rick - agreed, wait for the flood gates to open! Start social media networking - have to redo web site, get into one media and you need to get into another, then the blog needs re-doing, redo the blog and the web site ………. and so it goes on. But it is proving worth it!!

An excellent and accessible report revealing some very interesting, an occassionally surprising, results.
I think we still have some way to go here in the UK in convincing small businesses that time spent on social media sites can deliver positive outcomes.
However, where time is a premium this is often a hard sell.

Great report. But then I’m only echoing what everyone else has said. Now, my question is who is going to build an effective Social Media Management System? Is this going to come from the CRM world? Or, just be an addon to the CRM world?
I believe that as this paradigm becomes a more predominant business practice, companies will need a way to manage and leverage all of this. As we’re seeing, it is growing exponentially and will become impossible to manage in the not to distant future.

March 24th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
The report seems to be a nice start, but something about it, maybe the sample, seemed to limit the scope a bit. I just finished reading it and I’m left with the impression that maybe the people surveyed were too narrowly focused.
Different business segmentations might help give a little more valuable insight to the questions and responses.
For example, what percentage or number of people polled were affiliate marketers, verses marketers marketing for product sales, or services and consulting versus websites or web services, etc.
How many were marketing for companies or clients with businesses of $1 billion per year + in revenue, less than $1 billion, less than $100 million etc.
Maybe more importantly, if they are spending 10 - 20 + hours per week in marketing efforts, where are they spending that time? How much money is spent with that time?
One element caught me as almost funny. In general if someone is engaging in social marketing and they do not see an increase in their search engine rankings, then I’d posit that they are doing something very very wrong.
March 24th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
Brett;
At the end of the report we reveal the size of businesses (p. 24).
Why does it matter if folks are affiliate marketers vs. those selling products? That does nothing to validate or invalidate the nature/value of social media marketing.
We show you where folks are putting their time in based on the weekly hours at the end of the report (p. 21).
Remember, this report is really a snapshot of those currently doing social media marketing.
It should not surprise you that the larger organizations are lagging as the smaller ones tend to be early adopters.
March 24th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
The pie chart on P. 24 isn’t really clear (partly due to the color scheme (blue shows up twice for ex.) Regardless, that’s not my point, I think it would be more beneficial to understand the size of the company that is the target of the marketing. As a freelancer I’ve done marketing campaigns for companies much larger than myself. As a sub contractor I’ve done marketing campaigns for fortune 1000 companies. But if I just answered the poll as a ‘business owner’ or sole proprietor that might get lost in the response.
My question regarding affiliate marketers and the several other types of marketers that I mentioned had nothing to do with validating or invalidating any of those groups. However, each group when advertising in social media will need to approach the medium in different ways. So a marketer that is trying to build buzz about a new product for sale through multiple channels will operate much differently than an affiliate marketer trying to bring people to a landing page or even a new website hoping to become the latest 2.0 phenomenon.
They will all use the social media tool set differently and therefore if they respond to this poll, the subjective context of their answer is going to differ. As a reader of the report, the information will be more useful if we understand what type of target might have been in a marketing campaign.
Don’t get me wrong, that is a tall order for a white paper, even from the grandfather of white paper writers.
(I’m not trying to be hypercritical, but as someone that has been involved in this for several years the report does seem a little generalized and that is probably the point, especially as you do refer to this as a snapshot.)
I know a lot of ’social media gurus’ that spend hours and hours and days and weeks engaging in social media marketing, but to a certain extent if they are not using real money with their time, then they are essentially not putting their money where their mouth is and I do think that does speak a little to the validity of responses here. A future poll might try and capture a correlation between time spent per week or per month and money spent spent per week or month.
March 24th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Let’s see..
So,you surveyed marketing pros.
They told you that they don’t have a clue.
And now you’re giving away your findings to other marketers so that -what ?- they can feel being part of a great congregation of clueless so-called marketers ?
hmm..
I guess, I’m thinking, wow !, what an achievement !
Why do so many marketers think it’s gonna help them in any way ? Oh, that’s right: it’s for free ! Marketers like free stuffs, don’t they ? Free information, that must be worth SOMETHING, right ?!
wake up, Wayne, you’re the bait, not the hunter !
The only persons that owe to be interested are the ones that target clueless marketers, aka PR / communications agencies. Send it to seth godin or guy kawasaki, THEY’ll know what to do with it.
Goodness gratious, do you mighty people of marketing ever think at all ?
Next time I meet an armless woman, I’m gonna give her a nice and shiny ring. She won’t be able to wear it, but sowhat! she’s gonna feel lucky, won’t she ?
Feel like giving me your opinion ? I’m all yours

[…] Michael Stelzner at the WhitePaperSource has produced a pretty in depth report on the social media marketing industry. The industry now has enough years on it that this research is becoming more valuable to help make sense of this fast growing and often unwieldy area of the marketing mix. The report is based on interviews of over 900 social media users of varying degrees. The findings are interesting in some areas and not so surprising in others. Some highlights include: […]

My suggestion is to definitely be learning all you can about Google Friend Connect and the Google Social Networking going on within all Google properties.
Do not worry about making money or generating traffic from this Google revolution. I can teach you that if you don’t get it already.
What you want to be doing at this point is getting to know and understand what is going on here and putting the pieces in place.
This is THE coming social network and promotional venue that we will all be using for the next decade.
In fact I am staking my entire online business on this. Facebook may seem like a great place, but I only use it as a lead funnel.
I use Google Friend Connect and the social features Google has only this week enabled all over the place to actually close leads.
That is the difference in social sites and Google’s social offerings. Flat out salesletters and commercial offerings with out the spam complaints that will come from places like Facebook and social bookmarking sites like Digg.
Feel free to get in touch with me if you need more, Chris Lang is everywhere.

Some great stuff here. Interesting that sole proprietors were the largest group participating. Does that mean that sole proprietors have more of the time to participate and the ability to frequently access the Internet than others? Social media marketing certainly “costs less” if it’s your own time your burning. I think the ROI piece is what would be really helpful.
Thanks for this report!

What a fantastic undertaking. A great report which will be helpful to many.
There is much to gleen from it for anyone looking to fine tune their social marketing efforts.
It’s always so valuable to learn from others who have already been doing somthing. You have provided many things we can check our current efforts against, and bring up several good questions we should be asking ourselves.
Along with what you have reveled in the report it can also be beneficial to locate and watch those who have gotten successful at this social stuff - and there are some in all areas to be found.

As someone who has been using social media marketing for a few years now, it is no surprise to me that many marketers are new to social media. I always say that just because you have a hammer does not make you a master carpenter. Just like having a twitter account does not make you a social media expert. I think companies understand that and are very discriminating when hiring companies like us to implement their Social Media strategies. Great report Mike!

Thanks for getting this together, Mike, very interesting. Also of interest that those using social networks for a while were using more different tools then new users, probably because those less comfortable with the technology want to stick with the larger or better known forums. I wonder where Twitter will be a year from now.

Social Media Marketing is more or less like Face 2 Face marketing. The only difference is that instead of being face 2 face in the real sense, we’re communicating thru technology.
March 26th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Nice report. I’m amazed that marketers use Twitter more than Facebook. Was this report purely focused on the US? As here in the UK I think many people (not me mind) are still skeptical of Twitter as a marketing tool.

March 26th, 2009 at 11:43 am
@Michael A. Stelzner,
You said: “In the US, there are far more people on Facebook than Twitter also.”
Everyone on Twitter is a Marketer, and it is not clear to most what to do with Twitter any more then GFC networking is apparent to most.
Most of the increase in Facebook use I believe is the mass exodus from MySpace AKA SewerSpace by 20 somethings.
I have allot of 20 to 28 year old friends, they are all going to Facebook and the graduating seniors of last years high school class are off at college now and using Facebook to stay in touch too.
You have to remember 20 somethings do not use email. Think of FB as their email. I worked as a bartender for many years with these kids. I know them.
So, my rather long point here is that many, many Facebookers are NOT marketers. Tweeters? I would say 99%, but just a guess, what do you all think?
Chris Lang
March 26th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
I think Chris’s comment “You have to remember 20 somethings do not use email” is very insightful. I have 2 x 20 somethings and Chris is right - but I have not thought about it before.
As demographics start to dictate that in the “Corporate World” the 20 somethings move into decsion making roles, we had better re-think how we communicate with them if we to ever stand a chance of selling to them.
On a MSOFT ad the SVP of marketing at Coke Cola says (paraphrased) Coke doesn’t own the brand anymore - the consumer does. Guess what the sales person does not control the sales cycle anymore - the prospect does.
Get wise salespeople! Chris thanks for the insight.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
@Ian Farmer,
No Ian, what you just said is the most insightful thing I have heard in months.
The consumer owns the brand. WOW!
This is exactly what I told Matt Mullenweg in a post on WebProNews blog post yesterday.
Mullenweg thinks he owns Facebook, my point is that we own Facebook, Scoble said he should not listen to us, that mostly he is hearing from winners.
AAAHHHH, I don’t think so. I told him, Facebook is being shaped by kids, AND kids are fickle. The same ones that made MySpace are now shaping Facebook.
If they find something better they will bail FB and take up there. They won’t get Twitter because they text like crazy, they don’t need it, their phone is everything. Just watch what your kids do and then think how you can use that next big thing for marketing.
We may own the machine, the users own the content, oh, now we are back to Facebook again.
Things are going to change fast, wait till these same kids take up Google Latitude, that will be what makes Google the new social network. I know a few that are starting to get the power of Latitude now.
And they all ran out and bought Android phones, not iPhones. That is already last years to for them.
All I can say is learn everything you can about Google Friend Connect and what they are really doing.
Oh yeah, what is the next most 20 something used property? YouTube…..

Actually let me caution you a bit, I tried them all at once, somehow I survived it all.
Just try one, participate highly, if it is work and you hate it, bail.
DO NOT when you are new try to be everywhere, it will drive you crazy and you will quit.
Just try one, do it right and give it everything. I am on 5 networks but I very good at doing this. Eat an elephant one bite at a time.
Also, quick heads up, YouTube just added Twitter links and Google just added 30 social bookmarking sites to GFC widgets. Found a great video showing you this works on YouTube.

These survey results are biased as the survey was posted by Twitter on their website. Although there were 880 participants, the findings cannot be projected to the Social Media Industry. It is unknown of the 880 respondents (responded or complete successfully the survey?) if they are professional marketers and if the answers are truthful. The respondents were unrestricted and there was no screening. Lastly - results were not analyzed by independent third party.
A fluff piece at best - about as much substance as today’s Leo horoscope.
April 22nd, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Nancy;
All 880 respondents were self identified as marketers and did complete the survey fully.
Are implying that all of these people were not “professional” and that my organization is somehow not a ‘third-party?’
We have no ties to any social media sites.
Lastly, Twitter, blogs, facebook and email were used to source these results.
Appreciate your opinions…

I am a Gwave beta tester and we have been using it for months. You may want to consider an interview with me about how this all works together and IS the new social network of choice.
Public Gwave access rolls out next week. If you remember Gmail and the invites available to new users, Google tells me it will be the same for Gwave next week. I will have invites to pass on and so will all dev beta testers.
